Project Overview

This tutorial will guide you through creating a 3D model of a standard coffee mug using SolidWorks. You'll learn fundamental tools like Revolve, Shell, and Fillet while creating this practical everyday object.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Create New Part

• Open SolidWorks and create a new Part file
• Select the appropriate template (mm or inches)
• Save the file as "Coffee_Mug.sldprt"

Step 2: Sketch Mug Profile

• Select the Front Plane and start a new sketch
• Draw the vertical centerline (this will be our axis of revolution)
• Sketch the mug profile using Line and Tangent Arc tools
• Add dimensions to control the mug size (typical dimensions shown below)

Step 3: Revolve the Base

• Click on the Revolved Boss/Base feature
• Select your sketch profile and centerline
• Set revolution angle to 360°
• Click OK to create the solid mug body

Step 4: Shell the Mug

• Select the Shell feature
• Set wall thickness to 4mm (or your preferred thickness)
• Select the top face as the face to remove
• Click OK to create the hollow interior

Step 5: Create the Handle

• Select the Right Plane and create a new sketch
• Draw the handle profile using Spline or Arc tools
• Add dimensions to control handle shape and position
• Use the Sweep feature with a circular profile (8mm diameter)

Step 6: Add Fillets

• Apply fillets to smooth edges (2-3mm radius recommended)
• Fillet the handle connection points
• Fillet the interior lip of the mug
• Fillet the base of the mug

Step 7: Final Touches

• Add a bottom thickness (use Extruded Cut if needed)
• Apply appearances (ceramic, glass, or custom material)
• Save your completed mug model

Design Tips

• Use symmetry in your sketches for balanced designs
• Apply fillets last to maintain modeling flexibility
• Consider adding a saucer as an additional challenge
• Experiment with different handle shapes
